Some are famous for good reason. Others are the kind of spots people stumble onto once and end up talking about for years. And while Disney usually gets most of the attention, it’s far from the only place worth visiting.

If you’re looking for an excuse to pack up the car and spend a little quality time together, here are five Central Florida destinations we highly recommend.

1. Weeki Wachee Springs State Park

Weeki Wachee, about an hour north of Palm Harbor, feels like old-school Florida in the best possible way. The crystal clear spring stays cool year-round. It’s perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, or floating downriver on a hot afternoon.

And yes, the famous live mermaid shows are still going strong.

If you want the classic Central Florida road trip experience without the theme park crowds, this is it.

2. Bok Tower Gardens

This hidden gem sits on one of the highest natural points in the state and combines lush gardens, huge oak trees, and the famous Singing Tower carillon. It’s peaceful without feeling sleepy, and it makes an excellent slower-paced day trip when you want a break from traffic and tourist lines.

Bring comfortable shoes. You’ll want to wander.

3. Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

Sometimes you want relaxation. Sometimes you want roller coasters that launch you into another dimension.

Busch Gardens delivers both thrills and one of the more underrated zoo experiences in Florida. Between the coasters, live shows, and massive animal habitats, it’s easy to spend an entire day without running out of things to do.

For Palm Harbor locals, the drive is short enough that you can still sleep in your own bed afterward.

4. Crystal River

If seeing wild manatees is on your Florida bucket list, Crystal River is the place.

During cooler months, hundreds of manatees gather around the warm spring waters, and the area becomes one of the most unique wildlife experiences in the country. Even outside manatee season, the springs and waterways are worth the drive.

This is also one of the best places in Florida for clear-kayak tours and easy paddling.

5. Sanibel Island

Just outside Fort Myers, Sanibel Island is known as the “Seashell Capital of the World”. Besides shelling, the island features bike trails, fishing, and long stretches of shoreline that never feel overly built up.

There’s not much of an agenda here, which is part of the appeal. Grab lunch near the water, spend a few hours at the beach, and make the drive back after sunset over the causeway.
